Reminder: have your say on the Cultural Heritage Acts review

Wednesday, 10 July 2019

The Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships (DATSIP) is undertaking a review of the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 and  the Torres Strait Islander Cultural Heritage Act 2003 (the Cultural Heritage Acts).

We want to know what you think

The deadline for input to this review is fast approaching.

We encourage members to take a look at the DATSIP Consultation Paper and consider the key questions at the end of each section that can be used to guide your feedback.

Please provide comments by COB Friday 19 July 2019 to Crystal Baker, Lead - Planning & Development.

Consultation paper

The DATSIP consultation paper is structured into five key themes for the purposes of the review including:

  • Ownership and defining cultural heritage
  • Identifying Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parties
  • Land user obligations
  • Compliance mechanisms
  • Recording cultural heritage

Background

The purpose of the review is to examine whether the legislation:

  • is still operating as intended
  • is achieving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other stakeholders in Queensland
  • is in line with the Queensland Government’s broader objective to reframe the relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • should be updated to reflect the current native title landscape
