LGAQ President: Response to Senator Hanson's anti-Olympics campaign

Published: 14th February 2020

One Nation leader Senator Pauline Hanson’s comments regarding Queensland’s 2032 Olympic Games bid are both untrue and damaging to the economic, social and cultural growth of the state.

Following a comprehensive survey conducted by the LGAQ, an overwhelming majority of councils support the bid.

The LGAQ Policy Executive also unanimously supported the bid for the Olympic Games when they met in Brisbane last week.

Hosting the Olympic Games would be a game-changer for the future Queensland. Feasibility studies completed by both the State Government and the SEQ Council of Mayors show the event is projected to bring $8.6 billion in increased opportunities, $20.2 billion in international tourist expenditure and 130, 000 direct jobs.

The proposal is widely supported by regional communities and mayors across the length and breadth of the state. Investigations into the proposal have been ongoing since 2015.

Senator Hanson’s comments are self-serving and do not fully consider the comprehensive benefits the event would bring to communities across Queensland.

Her comments do not reflect those of community leaders across the state.
