Council: Carpentaria Shire Council
Mayor: Jack Bawden
Population: The estimated population of the Carpentaria Shire Council was 2,200 in 2021.

Since receiving funding through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCIP), Carpentaria Shire Council has been able to build a new footpath from town to the local rodeo grounds, providing employment, safety, and health benefits to the community.

Carpentaria Shire Council Mayor, Jack Bawden, said the untied nature of funding through the LRCIP, provided a valuable lifeline to regional councils.

“It is untied, unmatched, and uncompetitive which means small under-resourced councils get to provide better living standards and employment for their ratepayers which would otherwise not be achievable. It can be used for anything from a footpath to major infrastructure improvements.”

Already the LRCIP has provided a slip lane on the main road providing access to a property development – creating employment and investment in the Shire - as well as softball at a local child care center, improving safety.

“We have seen what is possible through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, which is why we’re asking the Federal Government to continue funding the program at $500 million per year.”

Every Queensland community contributes to the economic fabric of this nation. Every Queensland community deserves to be a liveable one. This Federal Election, councils have a set of priorities that will create more than 8000 jobs and generate $1.5 billion in economic activity for Queenslanders.
