Tom Pyne a Worthy Contributor in Public Office

LGAQ President Paul Bell has expressed his deepest condolences following the death of former Cairns Mayor Tom Pyne.

Mr Pyne first became Member of the Local Government Executive in 1979 and was re-appointed in 1985, 1988 and 1991.  He was also LGAQ President from 1997 to 2000.

"I am particularly saddened by the passing of Tom Pyne," Cr Bell said.

"His dedication to serving the community started with his involvement in politics from a young age, and he reached iconic status serving in the Mulgrave Shire and Cairns City Council's for nearly 40 years."

"In his five year term as Cairns Mayor, from 1995 to 2000, Tom more than left a mark.

"He had a passion for local issues and it's no understatement to say he spearheaded a number of projects that helped put Cairns on the map.

"You don't reach legend status without a lot of drive and dedication, and Tom will be sadly missed."
