Mackay welcomes 2017 Local Government Disaster Management Conference

Hosted by Mackay Regional Council the Local Government Disaster Management Conference joins Queensland mayors, councillors and senior council staff with representatives from key state government agencies involved in the delivery of Queensland’s Disaster Management System.

The three-day event ‘Our new conversation’ will see key disaster management stakeholders share information and experiences following Tropical Cyclone Debbie, using the recent natural disaster as a platform to discuss building community resilience and local capacity.

Key conference contributors include:

  • Commissioner Katarina Carroll, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services
  • Mr Iain Mackenzie, Inspector-General Emergency Management
  • Brendon Moon, Chief Executive Officer of the Queensland Reconstruction Authority
  • Brigadier Chris Field, Our State Recovery Coordinator
  • Assistant Commissioners Peter Fleming and Alistair Dawson, Queensland Police Service
  • Bruce Gunn, Regional Director Queensland, Bureau of Meteorology.

Among the many councils attending the timely conference are speakers and delegates from councils still busy with their own community recovery following Tropical Cyclone Debbie, including Mackay, Whitsunday, Rockhampton, Logan and Scenic Rim.

LGAQ President Mayor Mark Jamieson opened the conference today.

'Six weeks on from Tropical Cyclone Debbie and the job of preparing, responding and recovering is fresh in our minds, in part due to our legislative responsibilities, but much more due to the priority we place on the safety and wellbeing of our local communities,” Mr Jamieson said.

'It is pleasing that we are able to continue with this conference in one of the very communities that was in the path of the cyclone.

'In doing so we are all able to make a meaningful contribution to this local community and economy as it recovers.'

A key outcome of the conference will be a communiqué to move the Disaster Management System forward with progressive strengthening of collaborative and cohesive strategies at the local, regional and state levels.
