Mining laws protect communities

The LGAQ has welcomed the Palaszczuk Government’s introduction of legislation which will ban future resources projects from employing a 100 percent Fly In Fly Out workforce.

The Association has had a long standing policy against 100 percent FIFO developments in established resource communities as they cause social and economic harm to local communities.

The Government’s Strong and Sustainable Resource Communities Bill also seeks to prevent resource projects from discriminating against locals workers in recruitment processes for existing projects.

The legislation will also require resources companies to consult with local government when they undertake social impact assessments of projects.

However, the legislation fails to ensure companies need to perform a social impact assessment of current resources projects.

The Bill has been referred to Parliamentary Committee on Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources Committee. The LGAQ will be consulting with members on its submission to the Committee.
