Premier should talk to councils over plans to change voting system

Premier AP

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk should ensure councils are thoroughly consulted over reported plans to introduce compulsory preferential voting for local government elections.

Local Government Association of Queensland President Margaret de Wit said the Partners in Government agreement that the Palaszczuk Government has signed made it clear that councils should be consulted before major policy changes affecting them were introduced.

Ms de Wit said the LGAQ would “not accept anything less” than proper consultation if the Government pursued the issue.

“It is imperative that the appropriate consultation is done before they make any decision,” she said.

“I think it’s a very important that councils are able to contribute their views to policy changes as fundamental as this.”
