The Local Government Association of Queensland formed in 1896 to give local government a united voice. The Association  is the peak body representing local government in Queensland in its dealings with other governments, unions, business and the community.

For over a century the LGAQ, as the peak body and official voice of Queensland councils, has been representing and supporting Queensland local government.

The  Association's objectives are to:

  • promote the interests, rights and entitlements of members;
  • promote the efficient performance of local government in Queensland;
  • monitor and take action in relation ot any legislation affecting members;
  • advise and counsel members in matters of doubt and difficulty; and
  • undertake and promote activities endorsed at annual conference which are in the interests of local government in Queensland.

The Association's three branches - Policy and Representation, Workforce and Organisational Services and Business Enterprises - provide its members with advice, representation, support and direction.

The Mission statement of the LGAQ is

'To strengthen the ability and  performance of local government to better serve the community'.
