LGAQ welcomes new start date for Container Refund Scheme
The LGAQ has welcomed the decision by the State Government to delay the start date of the new Container Refund Scheme from 1 July 2018 to 1 November 2018 based on experience of the rollout of a similar scheme in New South Wales.
LGAQ chief executive Greg Hallam said, “The Container Refund Scheme is a key component of the new Queensland Waste Strategy and we have learned from interstate experiences that rushing the rollout would considerably impact local government and industry”.
“We congratulate the Government for taking a common-sense approach and listening to local government and industry concerns and acting by extending the commencement date to 1 November 2018.”
“Given everything else that is happening in the waste industry currently, it would be foolish not to,” Mr Hallam said.
He said the LGAQ would continue to participate as a key member of the Container Refund Scheme Advisory Group as we work towards local governments’ ambition of a zero waste future by 2028.
